CO₂ and climate benefits – why iCell insulation makes a difference
Insulation shouldn’t just save energy. It should also make the world better from day one. Our products – both loose-fill and batts – are developed to provide the market’s highest climate benefit. Because they are manufactured from recycled cardboard/corrugated cardboard and newsprint, large amounts of biogenic carbon are bound in the material. The result is something unusual: our products have a negative CO₂ value.
This means that, during their entire life cycle, they remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than the manufacturing releases.
How does it work? – Explained simply
Trees bind carbon dioxide as they grow. When the fibers in these trees become paper and cardboard, the carbon follows into the material. When we recycle these fibers and refine them into insulation, two things happen:
- The carbon remains in the product for many decades – in houses and buildings where the insulation is used.
- New emissions are avoided, because we replace insulation that normally requires large amounts of energy during manufacturing.
Together, this provides a double climate benefit:
both stored CO₂ and avoided emissions from alternative materials.
- Climate values
Why are negative CO₂ values important?
The construction sector accounts for large climate emissions, and more and more requirements are being imposed through climate declarations, EU taxonomy and upcoming life cycle rules. For developers and contractors, this means:
- Lower climate footprint in the projects’ LCA calculations
- Better opportunities to meet future climate requirements
- Increased score in environmental certifications such as Miljöbyggnad, BREEAM and LEED
For a homeowner, it means something even simpler:
You build with materials that make the climate better, not worse.
Our climate values
- iCell Loose Fill
This means that every kilogram of insulation actively reduces the atmosphere’s CO₂ load
- iCell Insulation Boards
Our boards bind large amounts of biogenic carbon while the manufacturing process is very energy efficient. The result is a clear negative climate value – something very few board materials on the market can offer. This makes our boards one of the most climate-smart choices on the market in building insulation.
- How it works
Manufacturing with low energy use
Our production is very energy efficient compared to mineral wool and foam-based insulation materials. The combination of low emissions and the large amount of biogenic carbon in the raw material means that our products have a net result that is strongly negative.
That is why you can say that iCell insulation functions as a long-term carbon storage.

A choice for the future
When you choose iCell – regardless of loose fill or insulation board – you choose:
